10:1 에스라가 하나님의 성전 앞에 엎드려 울며 기도하여 죄를 자복할 때에 많은 백성이 크게 통곡하매 이스라엘 중에서 백성의 남녀와 어린 아이의 큰 무리가 그 앞에 모인지라

10:2 엘람 자손 중 여히엘의 아들 스가냐가 에스라에게 이르되 우리가 우리 하나님께 범죄하여 이방 이방 여자를 맞이하여 아내로 삼았으나 이스라엘에게 아직도 소망이 있나니

10:3 곧 내 주의 교훈을 따르며 우리 하나님의 명령을 떨며 준행하는 자의 가르침을 따라 이 모든 아내와 그들의 소생을 다 내보내기로 우리 하나님과 언약을 세우고 율법대로 행할 것이라

10:4 이는 당신이 주장할 일이니 일어나소서 우리가 도우리니 힘써 행하소서 하니라

10:5 이에 에스라가 일어나 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 온 이스라엘에게 이 말대로 행하기를 맹세하게 하매 무리가 맹세하는지라

10:6 이에 에스라가 하나님의 성전 앞에서 일어나 엘리아십의 아들 여호하난의 방으로 들어가니라 그가 들어가서 사로잡혔던 자들의 죄를 근심하여 음식도 먹지 아니하며 물도 마시지 아니하더니

10:7 유다와 예루살렘에 사로잡혔던 자들의 자손들에게 공포하기를 너희는 예루살렘으로 모이라

10:8 누구든지 방백들과 장로들의 훈시를 따라 삼일 내에 오지 아니하면 그의 재산을 적몰하고 사로 잡혔던 자의 모임에서 쫓아내리라 하매

10:9 유다와 베냐민 모든 사람들이 삼 일 내에 예루살렘에 모이니 때는 아홉째 달 이십일이라 무리가 하나님의 성전 앞 광장에 앉아서 이 일과 큰 비 때문에 떨고 있더니

10:10 제사장 에스라가 일어나 그들에게 이르되 너희가 범죄하여 이방 여자를 아내로 삼아 이스라엘의 죄를 더하게 하였으니

10:11 이제 너희 조상들의 하나님 앞에서 죄를 자복하고 그의 뜻대로 행하여 그 지방 사람들과 이방 여인을 끊어 버리라 하니

10:12 모든 회중이 큰 소리로 대답하여 이르되 당신의 말씀대로 우리가 마땅히 행할 것이니이다

10:13 그러나 백성이 많고 또 큰 비가 내리는 때니 능히 밖에 서지 못 할 것이요 우리마 이 일로 크게 범죄하였은즉 하루 이틀에 할 일이 아니오니

10:14 이제 온 회중을 위하여 우리의 방백들을 세우고 우리 모든 성읍에 이방 여자에게 장가든 자는 다 기한에 각 고을의 장로들과 재판장과 함께 오게 하여 이 일로 인한 우리 하나님의 진노가 우리에게서 떠나게 하소서 하나

10:15 오직 아사헬의 아들 요나단과 디과의 아들 야스야가 일어나 그 일을 반대하고 므술람과 레위 사람 삽브대가 그들을 돕더라

10:1 While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites – men, women and children – gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.

10:2 Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.

10:3 Now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.

10:4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”

10:5 So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath.

10:6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water, because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.

10:7 A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem.

10:8 Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.

10:9 Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain.

10:10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt.

10:11 Now honor* the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.” / *Or Now make confession to

10:12 The whole assembly responded with a loud voice: “You are right! We must do as you say.

10:13 But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing.

10:14 Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”

10:15 Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, opposed this.
